Have you ever wondered if your business idea is crazy? Do you feel too embarrassed to even talk about it with your friends? Well, don’t dismiss the idea yet! There are companies that started with a crazy idea and earned a lot of money.
Here are some of them:
Crazy Idea #1: Pet Rock
Who would want a rock as a pet? Well, a guy named Gary Dahl had the idea of selling rocks as pets. The package even includes a 32-page official training manual “The Care and Training of Your Pet Rock”.
It was made in 1975 and lasted for 6 months. Although it was a short time, Gary Dahl sold over 1 million Pet Rock items for $4 each that made him a millionaire.
In September 2012, the Pet Rock became available again under Rosebud Entertainment, which currently holds the United States trademark rights. Amazing, right?
Crazy Idea #2: Santa Mail
Everybody knows who Santa is. And as children, we love how we look forward to opening our presents from Santa.
Did you know that enterprising entrepreneur Byron Reese started his Santa mail business in 2001? He got a postal address in Alaska. With that, parents pay $10 for personalized letters from Santa to be sent to their children.
He earned a lot of money doing it. Since he started, he sent over 500,000 letters and counting. And that’s without even wearing a Santa Claus costume.
Crazy Idea #3: Bottled Air
If you think your idea is the craziest of them all, well, you haven’t heard about Vitality Air that sells air in a can.
A Canadian startup company started selling fresh air from the Rocky Mountains in Ziploc bags for $1 on eBay. Now, they sell cans of air for $34 each.
They started selling air in a can as a novelty item but orders skyrocketed. Their major customers are from places with smog. And now, for something extra, they are selling oxygen with flavors. You can choose from strawberry, grape, and root beer.
Crazy Idea #4: Square Watermelon
Do you love watermelons? People in Japan have a hard time storing watermelons in their fridge, thus the creation of square watermelons.
The square watermelons came about in the 80s when the Japanese realized that square watermelons are easier to put in their compact refrigerators. They are also easier to carry.
Since the cost of making a square watermelon is high, these watermelons are expensive. Each square watermelon costs between $75 to 100$. They are now in the novelty items category but still remain popular in Japan as new shapes emerge, including hearts and pyramids.
